Although having access to more perspectives and information is often considered ideal, is this always the case? For this essay, the acquisition of knowledge refers to the process of gaining knowledge: this may occur on a small scale, with individual knowers accepting already existing knowledge claims, or on a larger scale, with knowledge communities gaining knowledge about a subject by producing new knowledge regarding it. “Voices” and “information” are two main sources from which we can acquire knowledge, with “voices” referring to other knowers and “information” referring to all other sources, such as books, articles, or even artworks. When a knowledge community does not have access to or either deliberately or unintentionally disregards some of these sources of knowledge, it can be classified as a “bubble.” Though knowledge acquisition happening in a bubble may not “matter” for individual knowers simply seeking to learn, it may “matter” on a broader scale, with the production of novel and unbiased knowledge being discouraged.
