Research Question

What is the effect of different concentrations of calcium chloride when dissolved in the distilled water on the boiling point elevation of the solution?

 

Introduction

As a person who often enjoys a bowl of instant ramen for a quick lunch, I’ve always had an enormous interest in how to cook a best instant ramen possible. One of the advices I repetitively heard was that I should pour the seasoning packet in the water first, before adding the noodle or other ingredients. People who gave this advice claimed that pouring the seasoning first would increase the boiling point of the ramen soup, which will in turn cook the noodle faster and improve the texture of the noodles. For many years now, I have been blindly following this advice without ever understanding the mechanism behind it or knowing if it is even true. While this has often stimulated my curiosity, my knowledge in chemistry before IB was fairly limited that I was far from ever finding out the truth behind this advice.

In the first year of IB chemistry, I came to learn that a solution boils when its total vapour pressure reaches the external pressure. Depending on the vapor pressure of the external environment or the solution, the boiling point can increase or decrease. This provided a hint to solving my long unsolved curiosity behind ramen seasoning packet, but I still had to significantly extend from here and research into concept of boiling point elevation. While this was not part of our course, I was very motivated to conduct extra research and experiments to investigate how the addition of salt to a solution could affect its boiling point.

Hence, in this experiment, I will be investigating the different concentrations of calcium chloride when dissolved in the distilled water on the boiling point elevation of the solution. Since it would be complicated to use an actual ramen calcium chloride. I will be conducting this experiment by adding calcium chloride powder to the distilled water, and measuring its boiling point with Vernier temperature probe. The values obtained will then be compared with the theoretical values obtained by the boiling point elevation equation…
