“We know with confidence only when we know little; with knowledge, doubt increases.” Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge.
We often see children babbling things as if they are absolute facts, while scientists explain that
something has only been “hypothesized”, displaying their sense of doubt. This is indeed the paradox of
knowledge, which we see when the superficiality of knowledge builds confidence within us, while the
profundity of knowledge simply invites more doubt. The applications of this paradox are notable in many
fields of studies, ranging from the Natural Sciences to the Human Sciences. As such, “confidence” is the
feeling of firm trust, with its diametrically opposed word being “doubt”, which is the feeling of
uncertainty. Through asking knowledge questions regarding how the methodology and the development
of knowledge in both Natural Sciences and the Human Sciences increases or decreases doubt as
knowledge is gained, we are able to examine the prescribed title.
