Prescribed Title (Q1): “The quality of knowledge is best measured by how many
people accept it.” Discuss this claim with reference to two areas of knowledge

The quality of knowledge can be defined as the extent to which a claim
accurately explains or describes phenomena. Thus, it follows that acceptance of such
knowledge means that one has incorporated the knowledge beliefs into one’s own
worldview. In answering this question, it is arguable that good quality knowledge
should be justified with reference to reliable evidence and that one sign that knowledge
might be well justified is that it is accepted by the people. This leads to the first
knowledge question, “Is the acceptance of knowledge an indicator of the reliability
of its evidence and justification?” William James, however, proposes pragmatism, an
approach to philosophy which holds that the truth or meaning of a statement is to be
measured by its practical consequences and he went on to apply the pragmatic method
