“For artists and natural scientists, which is more important: what can be explained or
what cannot be explained? Discuss with reference to the arts and the natural sciences”

In order to answer the prescribed title, we first need to define the term “explain”. Explanation is a statement that clarifies why something happened or what caused something. In this sense, explanation is different from description. For example, if one were to describe a concept like tides, providing sensory information about what one observes – the rising and
falling of the sea level – would be enough. But, if one were to explain tides, one should clarify why they happen and what causes them, such as the gravitational forces of the moon.
In short, to explain is to provide clarification regarding the causal relationship between different objects. Then, what can be explained seems more important to scientists while what cannot be explained seems more important to artists. This is because natural science seems to be an area of knowledge in which scientists try to discover objective laws of nature and causal relationships between phenomena in the natural world. Accordingly, clarifying a causal relationship between natural phenomena seems to be the purpose of scientists in this area of knowledge. In contrast, the arts seem to be an area of knowledge where an artist explores the subjective experience of being oneself. In other words, an artist seems to focus on expressing one’s ideas and emotions in a creative way. Therefore, clarifying a causal relationship doesn’t seem too necessary for the arts; as a matter of fact, many artists might argue that the artworks are to be experienced, not to be explained…
