Reflective Statement

The interactive oral helped me recognize that, in Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi used literary techniques like setting, first person narration and motif to focus on the themes of religion, family, and warfare.

The setting of the graphic novel is the 1980s in Iran. The setting is mostly in Marji’s house, which makes it intimate and revealing. This makes her life transparent to the readers. Marjane and her family hear the news from the newspaper or radio. This causes the readers to feel the distance to the event and difficult to explore the American’s perspective on Iranian
Revolution.

The author uses the first-person narration to convey the story through innocent eyes of a child. This makes the reader for better to relate and understand her life and develop the theme of coming of age. Since Persepolis is the memoir of a young girl, childish behaviors and character development were able to be seen. Her accounts of events change as she grows up and the character development was more easily seen.

A variety of emotions were shown throughout the text. We discussed that Marji’s confusion is used as a motif throughout the whole graphic novel. She changes her ideas toward religion. At the beginning of the novel, she mentions “Deep down I was very religious but as a family, we were very modern and avant-garde” (Satrapi, 6) which is contrasting. In addition, Marji is uncertain about her identity. With her westernized outfits and American songs, it represents that she likes to be westernized. However, at the same time, her parents constantly reminds her to not forget who she is and she is proud of her heritage. Since she is caught between western influences and pride in her culture, she experiences much confusion and difficult emotions…
