As part of the IB Higher-Level Mathematics syllabus, I learned to solve the volume of solids of revolution using integration. My desire was to go beyond practicing the
method with textbook problems and employ it in calculating the volume of an actual object, as I am passionate about adding value to knowledge by applying it to solve real-life questions.
At home, I had a wooden figure of a Finnish character Snorkmaiden as a souvenir. As I observed the figure, I realized that many parts were solids of revolution. It also had curves and cuts that could only be represented by multiple equations or through multi-step manipulations.
Therefore, I wanted to challenge myself to view the Snorkmaiden figure spacially from various angles and sides, represent curves with mathematical equations, and figure out optimal ways to solve the volume of a complex 3-D object.
