Can new knowledge change established values or beliefs?

New knowledge may both change and sustain established beliefs based on pure evidence or individual perception and sentiment towards the knowledge. Interestingly, beliefs originating from natural sciences depend significantly on objective proof, whereas beliefs from human behavior are responsive to individual opinions.

The object is a screenshot of Korea’s DaeHan-Policy news that aired on February 12th, 2020, where Dr. Kim Jonghyuk attempted to convince the public of the reason for wearing masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Kim outlined both the effectiveness of masks in preventing the spread of COVID-19 by citing scientific research and the role of masks in maintaining each citizen’s social responsibilities. Prior to these expert announcements, the general public had established beliefs that masks were only useful when an individual’s health was already compromised, not when they weren’t sick…
