The effect of increasing concentration of propolis on the growth of Escherichia coli
Propolis is a beehive product made by bees using resinous substances collected from botanical sources (Pascoal). The bees use propolis to protect and repair the beehives, and also prevent the invaders from coming in the beehives by wrapping them in propolis (Pascoal). The product is mainly composed of resins, waxes, essential oils, pollen and other organic compounds, as shown in Figure 1 (Pascoal). Propolis has many pharmaceutical properties, for example: antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal activity. This investigation is valuable for development in pharmaceutical field because if the antimicrobial property of propolis can be supported, it shows that there is a potential it could be used as means of medication as an antibiotic.
The two variables being investigated are concentration of propolis and growth of Escherichia coli. E. coli is chosen as the organism used because they are one of the most common bacteria species, found in the environment, foods, and intestines of people and animals (CDC). Some E. coli can make people sick, causing diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia (CDC)…
