Steel is widely used for building construction, infrastructures, automobiles, and furniture for everyday life thanks to its property of being sustainable, cheap, and durable, with its tensile strength varying from “290 N/mm2 to 870 N/mm2.” (Beck) Steel is an alloy made mostly of iron, the fourth most common element on earth, combined with carbon and small amounts of other elements, “with its production reaching 1950.5 million tonnes (Mt) for the year 2021.” (worldsteel ASSOCIATION)
However, there is an unsolved problem with using steel, which is the rusting of steel. Rusting weakens the metal, making structures weak and harmful to the environment even though it is non-toxic. It can increase the risk of deterioration of historical monuments and even cause problems in daily life, as it is likely to affect vehicles or other household furniture. This rusting process significantly speeds up under sea conditions as the steels are in direct contact with water and other substances inside the sea. The cost of removing or replacing rust is enormous, so people have tried to reduce the rate of rusting by using corrosion inhibitors. The corrosion inhibitors which are frequently used are usually made out of “inorganic compounds such as silicates or phosphates. They either adsorb on the surface of the metal, forming a protective barrier or block the cathodic site by precipitation.” (palanisamy) …
