Investigating the effect of temperature on rates of the two reactions steps of the chemical chameleon

Introduction

The redox reaction between glucose and potassium permanganate is often used to demonstrate the beauty of chemical reactions. Deserving of its title as the “chemical chameleon,” the reaction displays a wide array of colors during its progression, ranging from purple, blue, green to orange, along with a multitude of shades in between.

During the chemical chameleon reaction, the permanganate ion is reduced to the manganate ion, where glucose acts as the reducing agent. Then the manganate ion undergoes a disproportionation reaction with water to yield manganese (IV) oxide (Hutchins). Disproportionation is when a molecule undergoes simultaneous oxidation and reduction to yield at least two different products (Helmenstine). The oxidation state of manganese changes throughout the reaction, from purple +7 to green +5 and finally to a brown solid +4. As there is less research on the overall reaction stoichiometry and the oxidation of glucose, only the half equations of manganese are listed below (Flisek). I found these equations sufficient, provided I make a few assumptions, for the calculations and analysis in my investigation…
