Effect of moles of electrons on mass deposition during electroplating nickel on copper

1. Introduction
Since I was young, I wondered why rose-gold colored copper coins were slowly covered with black. I finally learned the answer when I was in 7th grade: it was due to copper’s corrosion, which is caused by reaction between copper and moisture in the air. The corrosion of copper is a form of oxidation, in which copper reacts with oxygen by losing electrons, resulting in the formation of copper (II) oxide, which is corroded copper (Cruse et al. 479). This piqued my interest in the concept of oxidation for the first time. In line with my interest, I sought a way to prevent this corrosion and through grade 12 chemistry class, I found that by electroplating, we are able to reduce the rate of and even prevent corrosion.

Through further investigation, I learned that electroplating could increase conductivity and prevent corrosion, as well as other benefits, and is used in making daily products such as building structures, kitchenware, and machinery parts.
