The following research is mainly pending on the correlation between second/third wave feminism and its implicit and explicit impact on mainstream American newspapers.

Abstract

Newspapers, on a surface level, stand out as a form of comprehensive media that conveys informative or casual knowledge to an unspecified demographic. Notwithstanding,
the newspaper simultaneously holds a conceit in which it implicitly dispatches certain political and sociocultural ideologies to the audience (Linda, 2009). The implication is that newspapers could turn out to be an amplifier of social movements (Mary, 2012), or could merely reflect societal changes through the use of layouts, headings, and languages.

Before the feminist movement became conscious in the Western ground through the #metoo movement(), the feminist movement emphasised the importance of gender equality to many people and had gradually developed from the first wave to the third wave. As demonstrated by the sprawling feminist movement, gender stereotypes are implicit around the world and caused gender discrimination. Feminism, by definition, is the belief in social, economic, and political equality of the genders (Brunell, 2016) and is an ongoing transnational movement to facilitate and grant the rights of women in a patriarchal society.

Ironically, as continual world wars in a Western society empowered the extent of its patriarchal nature (Linda, 2021), the feminist movement rather created a composition where conflicts with mainstream society; here, the newspaper functioned as a medium to augment masculinity and devalue the partisan of females. Where the evident dominance of males was accredited, the media targeted them as of whom dispatch and follows the socio-cultural trend. Especially, where the media discusses ‘informative’ information such as the case of female sexual assault victims, the language implicitly mixes emotive language to visualise the circumstance of the victims, rather than focusing on the matter of the case.
