The characters in Tim O’Brien’s short story collection The Things They Carried each reflect unique dispositions of American soldiers in the Vietnam War. This essay will discuss how O’Brien represents the soldiers as conflicted before the war, absentminded during combat, and remorseful after the war, to censure
the government of its involvement in the war and revitalize America’s awareness on the affliction that yet dwells within the soldiers. It will analyze the representation of the soldiers addressing specific short stories within a temporal framework to demonstrate the meaning of the war for the soldiers from a wider scope of history.
Through the protagonist, Tim O’Brien, of “On the Rainy River”, the author represents soldiers in the Vietnam War as morally conflicted in face of the draft. The story is largely composed of internal dialogue, where the protagonist constantly expresses doubt about the war. For instance, he questions, “Was it a civil war? Who started it, and when, and why?” (O’Brien 38)…
