Abstract

This essay examines the tabloid portrayal of two chosen celebrities. My research question is as follows: How are Amy Winehouse and Kate Winslet portrayed by the British tabloids, and what does this reveal about British values and expectations of celebrities?

In order to answer this question, I first analyzed the relationship between the media, public, and celebrities. Then I examined how these celebrities were portrayed in different British tabloids based on the language used. Finally, I conducted a survey to understand British values and expectations of celebrities. Various online news articles in British tabloids were used as the main sources for this investigation. They were obtained from three different websites: The Sun, Online Mirror, and Daily Star. In order to find out their portrayals in the papers, I examined the language used in articles, kinds of events reported, main idea of articles, and writer’s attitude towards these two celebrities.

Throughout my research, tabloid portrayals of Amy Winehouse and Kate Winslet were found to differ greatly. The former is portrayed in a critical and cynical way, while the latter is highly praised in tabloid articles. I designed and conducted an online survey of 89 British people to find out their values and expectations of celebrities…
