Introduction

More than 1 in 3 adults are considered to be overweight where BMI is 25 to 29.9. About 1 in 6 children with ages 2 to 19 are considered to have obesity where BMI is more than 30.
According to NHANES data from 2013 to 2014, 70.2% of men and women are overweight or obese (Overweight.,2017). Worldwide obesity and overweight rates increase by 27.5% in the
US over the past 33 years. At the same time, rates among children increased by 47.1% (Whiteman, 2014)Thus, I was interested in finding out whether the medication, Orlistat helps obese people and whether the concentration of Orlistat has an effect on lipase activity. This medication is used for medically obese people not just those who want to lose weight. This brings to the research question To what extent does the concentration of dietary pill(Orlistat) affect the rate of lipase breakdown of milk as measured by pH decreased over 10 minutes?

Background information

Lipase
Lipase is an enzyme in the digestive tract that breaks down(hydrolyze) triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acid which stores energy. It is also known as hydrolase since it is an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of hydrolysis(Hydrolysis is the activity of breaking the hydrogen bond by using water molecules). Our body produces enzymes specific to the type of food that we eat. Lipase is the enzyme that is produced from the pancreas in the body, whenever a person ingests food that contains lipids.
