HL History IA (25/25)

현행 IB HL History 커리큘럼의 첫 해인 2017년에 제출한 IA로, 25점 만점에 25점을 맞은 IA입니다.

쿠바의 Fidel Castro의 집권에 있어서 New York Times 기자였던 Herbert Matthews의 역할을 평가하는 에세이로, 충분히 좁고 적절한 주제 선정과 효과적인 사료 사용으로 높은 평가를 받았던 에세이입니다. 저희 학교에서 24점을 맞았던 다른 학생의 에세이의 점수가 IB moderation을 받고도 유지되었기에, 제게 25점을 주신 학교 선생님의 평가는 정확하다고 할 수 있을 것입니다.

저는 최종적으로 HL History에서 원점수로 92점을 받았는데요, 제 IA에서 IB 역사에서 좋은 IA의 특징 뿐 아니라 시험 답안을 작성할 때에도 사용할 수 있는 narrative technique의 실례를 확인할 수 있을 것이라 생각됩니다.

Section A: Identification and Evaluation of Sources

This investigation explores the question: “What was The New York Times journalist Herbert Matthews’ role in Castro’s rise to power?” The investigation examines how Matthews contributed to Castro’s rise by influencing the U.S. policies and Cubans.

The first source is Anthony DePalma’s 2004 paper “Myths of the Enemy: Castro, Cuba, and Herbert L. Matthews of the New York Times.” It is relevant, because it explains how Matthews influenced U.S. State Department’s actions on Castro. The origin is valuable, for DePalma, a Columbia journalism professor, furnishes journalism insight into the journalist-government relationship in the United States of 1950s, which is crucial to understanding how Matthews’s articles were able to influence U.S. policies.
