Introduction
Research question:
How does the antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles on Staphylococcus aureus compare to the synthetic antibiotic Amoxicillin?
Background:
Since the discovery of penicillin in 1928 by Alexander Fleming, chemical antibiotics have been actively developed and used in the medical field and throughout the long period of using chemical synthetic antibiotics caused bacteria to evolve and form resistance leading to the creation of superbugs, bacteria that can survive most of our antibiotics. (Hudzicki, 2009) Super bacteria such as the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains are a huge threat to the public health, and this has stimulated active research for new antibacterial agents that can be used to combat bacteria resistance (Morones, 2005).
Metallic nanoparticles have been receiving attention especially silver nanoparticles, as silver has high antibacterial efficiency (Panáček et al., 2017). Silver was widely used throughout history for thousands of years. Historical records show that Persians, ancient Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians used silver to preserve food and water for longer time periods (J. Wesley Alexander, 2009) And since the 19th century, compounds associated with silver was used widely for antibacterial purposes. (Prabhu and Poulose, 2012)…
