Measuring the Initial Rate of Hydrogen Peroxide Decomposition Per Gram of Different Sources of Catalase
Introduction
Living organisms are made up of cells, each of which carries out basic functions of life. Since the human eye cannot see such processes, we deem them simple. However, as a matter of fact, they are incredibly complex and crucial for survival. An example of such processes would be the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Every organism’s cell needs to carry out this process to protect the cell from oxidative damage. In biology class, we learned that this process is a chemical reaction, happening with the help of catalase, an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction. Not only did we wonder about the process but we also wondered about how different organisms perform it. Therefore, we decided to
conduct an investigation to find out.
The purpose of the investigation is to find the source with the most catalase activity. Its application can be found in various medical fields. Some research has indicated that a lack of catalase can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes . Thus, the results of this investigation can open the doors to further research upon treatment towards increasing catalase levels in organisms. Perhaps the consumption of foods with high-level catalase activity can increase an organism’s own level of catalase.
Background Information
Enzymes are biological molecules, which are typically proteins, that speed up the rate of chemical reactions that take place within cells. Catalase is a type of enzyme, of which quaternary structure is made up of 4 polypeptides. Each polypeptide is made up of more than 500 amino acids . The overall shape is globular, which suggests that it is a functional protein rather than a structural protein. Different organisms produce slightly different versions of the enzyme but the general composition remains the same. Due to the slight modifications, enzymes in different organisms also carry out slightly different functions
