Research Question

To what extent does ocean pH impact the rate of breakdown of marine exoskeleton? (As modelled by experimentally determining the rate equation and Arrhenius equation in the decomposition of calcium carbonate by hydrochloric acid)

Introduction

I was first introduced to the topic of ocean acidification in my IB geography class during the global climate unit. It was interesting to learn that the acidification of ocean water could affect shell building and erosion of marine organisms from coral reefs to lobsters and oysters. In fact, the acidification not only results in the loss of biodiversity but also the loss in revenue from tourist and food industries and causes invasive species of algae to flourish. Furthermore, due to the fact that climate change is an ongoing global issue that will continue to occur in the future, I thought that investigating this topic would also be significant in the real world and allow me to investigate critical real life issues by applying my chemistry knowledge. Climate change is a serious global issue that our generation and future generations will have to go through. One of the main causes of climate change is due to the increase in atmospheric CO2. In fact, the ocean is a carbon sink absorbing 50% of the atmospheric Carbon dioxide. However, this causes the ocean to acidify.
