Chapter 10: Oligopoly
Characteristics of an Oligopoly:
– Such few firms, that firms are able to control prices
– Between low and medium concentration
– High entry barriers for large-scale
production
– Interdependence between firms (interdependence tends to make firms want to collude in order to maximise profits)
– Firms may also compete vigorously (this can result in out-profiting the other few firms if done successfully)
– Price rigidity (prices tend to be stable)
Types of agreements when colluding:
– Agreeing to increase consumer prices
– Deals between suppliers and retailers:
vertical price fixing (illegal)
– Monopsony pricing: retailers collude to
reduce the amount paid to suppliers
– Collusion between existing firms in an
industry to exclude new firms from entering to prevent the market becoming more competitive
– Collusive tendering (collusive bidding schemes)
