Rationale
This written task addresses Part 3 – Literature: Texts and Contexts. I have focused on two learning outcomes: to “consider the changing historical, cultural and social contexts in which particular texts are written and received” and to “understand the attitudes and values expressed by literary texts and their impact on readers.” The written task is based on the play Othello by William Shakespeare, which explores the theme of racism by portraying the discrimination faced by the titular character, a “black moor.”
I have chosen to convey this theme by writing a speech delivered by William Shakespeare at the March on Washington on 28 August 1963; the transcript for this speech would later be published in American Rhetoric: Top 100 Speeches…
