#MeToo is a movement in which women recount their experiences of sexual molestation and assault (Tikkanen,2021). It spread globally (Kent,2013) through social media which enabled
victims to share their experiences with their peers or the public easily online (Gill and Orgad, 2017). In the first half of 2018, Korean women started shouting “#MeToo” in opposition to sexual abuse, and women’s inferiority stemmed from Korean society. Students in Gwangjang-village raised awareness and accused their teachers of sexual harassment and gender inequality, using Twitter as their primary means of communication. To evaluate the impact of social media on spreading social movement and reducing structural violence, I decided to investigate “To what extent did the use of social media effectively trigger the social movement #MeToo in Gwangjang village and invoke reduction of structural violence?”
This engagement activity is closely related to the initiation and process of social movements using social media. Moreover, such social movements can have a great relation with structural violence, as students accuse that sexual harassment they’ve suffered stemmed from Korean society where male teachers occupied a higher position and the center of society due to their innate masculinity and authoritative power (Weigert, 2008) as educators. When I first learned about social movements during the global politics classes, I started questioning if the spread of feminist movements genuinely advances the cause of the movement. In 2018, I heard from a friend that the #MeToo movement was held at Gwangnam middle school and spread based on Twitter. As an alumnus of Gwangnam elementary school, I thought that it was a great opportunity to find answers to the question I previously asked.
In order to explore this topic, It is vital to define structural violence; systematic ways in which social structures harm or otherwise disadvantage individuals, and social movements. The solidarity of female students on Twitter is a social movement; a network of informal interactions between a plurality of individuals and groups engaged in a political or cultural conflict on the basis of shared collective identity (Diani,1992), initiated by social media, held to make a change in the gender hierarchy rooted in society…
