Introduction

In a metropolitan city like Osaka, Japan, where franchises remain very competitive, retailers must branch out and increase revenue. One of the challenges that franchises face today is to find the best location to open the store where the potential development is great. One example of such a franchise would be Starbucks: the worldwide coffee chain.

Many factors dictate where the new Starbucks shop location should be. One factor is the physical distance between neighboring branches. The neighboring branches must be distanced relatively equally to equalize the access time to the store for people residing in different areas (Lynch). With that in mind, this paper aims to focus on applying math in examining the distance between Starbucks branches in Osaka and determining the optimal position for a new Starbucks branch.

I chose to investigate this topic because I consume Starbucks drinks regularly (iced caramel macchiato tall-size), and I was upset that the closest branch to my house is located around 2.5 km away. I felt that the access time is too long, and wondered why there are no Starbucks shops near my house. I have been concerned with this phenomenon for a while because I also have an interest in doing a part-time job at Starbucks when I become an adult, and I would prefer the shop to be as near as possible to my place. Therefore, with the support of math, I wanted to know whether it would be possible for a new branch to open near my neighborhood, less than 1 km away from my house. I believe that my neighbors who love Starbucks have the same concern, and it would benefit the community to build a new shop in my area. With regards to the mathematical processes, this investigation will center around constructing Voronoi diagrams on Geogebra, an online graphing calculator. Voronoi diagrams divide the given space into multiple regions, which have respective sites in each region chosen beforehand. Voronoi diagrams are applied in many real-life situations such as identifying the nearest airport when the plane diverges or identifying the best possible location for a new store (Lynch)…
