Theory of Knowledge Essay
Prompt 5 : “Given that every theory has its limitations, we need to retain a multiplicity of theories to understand the world.” Discuss this claim with reference to two areas of knowledge.
Colloquially, the concept of theory suggests that a theory is just a hunch. However, by definition, it is “a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained (Merriam Webster).” Thus, when an idea is presented by theory, it is testable.
It is widely assumed that theories have limitations and that newer theories build on other previous theories to create knowledge. This further leads one to assume that multiple theories need to be retained to acquire an understanding of the world. Time is a continually varying factor, and thus, with time contexts do change, it may lead us to believe that the applicability of a theory or theories must be judged with relevance to that era. Can a conclusion be reached only if a theory stands the test of time? This also raises the question of how much evidence is required for a theory to be accepted as a basis of our understanding of the world…
