An Investigation of the Effect of Varying pH of Simulated Acid Rain on the Growth of Mung Beans (Vigna radiata)

Introduction

Throughout the last decade, acid rain has been a topic of global concern, as industrialization-led combustion released compounds like sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the air. As a student engaged in Model United Nations, I participated in environmental discussions about how to prevent the damage of the acidification of rain, which led me to develop a personal concern for this environmental issue and the consequences it would have on Earth. Although most discussions have revolved around aquatic environments and human health, I was not taught of the effect of acid rain on terrestrial plants. After learning that the pH of unpolluted rain is 5.6, which is slightly acidic, I wondered how further acidification of rain would impact the growth of terrestrial plants, and whether plants would still withstand slight changes in the pH of the water they receive as rain. Through this investigation, I aim to explore the growth of mung beans (Vigna radiata), as the germination of the plant is said to take around 2 to 5 days, and as it is an accessible plant species. I believe that learning about the importance of rain acidity on plant growth will help me understand the severity of the ecological impact of acidified rain.

Research Question

What is the effect of varying pH solution (pH = 4.0, 4.4, 4.8, 5.2, 5.6), manipulated by changing the volume of acetic acid (CH3COOH) diluted in distilled water (H2O), on the growth of mung beans (Vigna radiata), as measured by the change in shoot height over the duration of 21 days?

 

Background Information

The experiment aims to investigate the growth stages of the plant starting from seed. Germination is the development from a dormant seed to seedling, and requires water and suitable temperatures to activate metabolic processes in the plant (Penn State Extension). The absorption of water via the micropyle and seed coat releases a hormone called gibberellin, which causes the elongation of cells, by affecting the properties of the cell wall (Jones and Kaufman). Plant growth occurs by increased number of cells and cell size, and generally occurs in the apical meristem, where undifferentiated cells in the shoot apex undergo cell division, leading to the elongation of the stem. Plant nutrients are needed by plants for growth, the three essential nutrients being nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (Lines-Kelly).
