Within a culture, there exists a world of knowledge – it is a conglomerate of ideas, beliefs and perspectives that have accumulated and developed over hundreds and thousands of years,
through the interactions between distinct knowers grouped as a ‘society’. In this sense, culture can be seen as collective shared knowledge, established through the process of synthesis and
synergistic collaboration between individual knowers, which can subsequently shape the personal knowledge of a secondary group of knowers. As stated by Soviet psychologist Lev
Vygotsky, “A mind cannot be independent of culture”, in which independence can be defined as detached from, or free from external influence. As knowledge constitutes an essential part of culture, one could argue that the opposite holds true – that culture inevitably influences knowledge. Examining the prescribed title through a second-order lens, this paper explores
whether culture is a necessity in the production of knowledge, and in what ways shared knowledge of a community or society influences the acquisition, analysis and production of secondary knowledge. Through the investigation of the role of culture in mathematics and the arts, this paper reveals that in acquiring, interpreting and producing knowledge, cultural influence is inevitable.
Mathematics is an area of knowledge which has been argued to be culture-free, or completely independent of cultural influence. Mathematical Platonism directly addresses this
