(HL- Bio, Chem, Maths, SL – Eng LL A, Kor LL A, Geog)
“The effects of global climate change will only be negative” To what extent do you agree with this statement?
According to the IB Geography syllabus, global climate change is a “geographical process” that is defined as: “changes in global patterns of drought, floods and storms, resulting from changes in the Earth’s atmosphere such as the enhanced greenhouse effect.” As the statement in the question claims, the effects of global climate change are negative to a large degree. Nevertheless, the statement is in fact inaccurate as there are definitely positive impacts as well. Throughout this essay, both the positive and negative consequences will be examined by exploring case studies of multiple “geographical places”. For an effective evaluation, consequences will be divided into three categories: glacier retreat, biomes and agriculture. Certainly, global climate change is most profoundly related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: ‘Climate Action’. Yet, due to the broad influence of the process, it has significant links to most other SDGs, including ‘Affordable and Clean Energy’ (7) and ‘Life on Land’ (15). Such consideration of potential impacts of a “geographical process” is a means of predicting “geographical possibility”, which ultimately prepares for effective management and mitigation strategies.
Firstly, global climate change facilitates the retreat of glaciers, which changes eustatic and isostatic sea level; this has significant global and local impacts. Melting of ice converts water from solid to liquid form. Since the liquid form has a greater thermal expansion, the ocean occupies more space, thus sea level rises. Such change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events…
