Establishing shared knowledge through accepting others’ personal knowledge is often determined by various factors such as evidence, professionalism, or trust. As obtaining confidence in an information influences one’s perspectives, it may be argued that trust also contributes to deciding which knowledge to consider as true. The title explores the correlation of the extent that knowledge claims cannot be accepted without trust. Accepting knowledge claims refers to the action of consenting to undertake a statement that the knower believes to be true while trust refers to firm belief in the reliability of something without evidence. Thus, to analyze the relationship between accepting knowledge claims and trust, this essay proposes the question “To what extent is the element of trust involved in the acceptance of knowledge?”
In both areas of Natural Sciences and History, trust is required in the acceptance of knowledge since it is impossible to acquire every information of how knowledge is produced. However, the influence of trust may be limited due to factors that contribute to the production of knowledge, such as the existence of evidence and professionalism.
