## Investigating the effect of pivot position on the period of a compound pendulum

Introduction

An important assumption in physics is the assumption of a point mass, a notion that the entire mass of an object is concentrated at a single point. However, this assumption becomes obsolete when analyzing many real-life dynamics in various engineering disciplines. I was particularly interested in the point particle assumption of a simple pendulum and how calculations become increasingly complex otherwise. For instance, the antique pendulum wall clock at my uncle’s house or the pendulum ride in an amusement park both consist of swinging rigid rods; however, rigid metal rods, unlike strings, have mass evenly distributed throughout, thus their oscillations cannot be treated as that of a simple pendulum.

A compound pendulum, or a physical pendulum, is a rigid body that is free to oscillate about its horizontal axis. In a compound pendulum, the distance between the center of gravity of the pendulum (COG) and its pivot position is relatively similar to the dimension of the pendulumitself; in other words, the compound pendulum cannot be treated as a point mass at a large distance away from its suspension point (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica)…
