Humankind has been striving for improvement in the quality of knowledge they produce in different academic disciplines, which are fields of study or a branch of knowledge that is researched (Serenko and Bontis). Though it is often true that the quality of knowledge produced is proportional to the duration of historical development, this is not always the case. Furthermore, the correlation is highly dependent on how quality of knowledge and duration of development are defined. The duration of historical development can be defined as the time elapsed since the birth of the academic discipline. Quality of knowledge, on the other hand, does not have a universal definition but depends on different areas of knowledge (AOKs). In natural sciences, for instance, quality of knowledge can be defined as the degree to which a knowledge can be supported with evidence and the extent to which the knowledge can be applied to produce further knowledge. In the arts, however, the quality can be defined as the maintenance of popularity or acceptability among readers.
