John Locke, an England philosopher, claimed that ‘individuals are born without built-on
mental content and that therefore all knowledge comes from experience or perception.’ (The Editors
of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2016) (RogersGraham, 2017). Instinctive judgment can be thus defined
as one’s immediate evaluation, grounded in one’s injected information, made in response to
information one perceived. Consequently, one’s instinctive judgment can be data-driven and
subjective. Thus, it is imperative to check the yet-proven judgments with suspicion. Multiple ways of
knowings (WOK) are used in the checking process. This essay evaluates the use of reason grounded
on memory and sense perception in two areas of knowledge (AOK) – human science and ethics.

In criminology, a human science, reason is often used to track suspects. In environmental
criminology, a study of criminal patterns within particular environments, criminologists see ‘variation
in the environment as shaping the likelihood [of] where [crime might actually occur]’, and thus focus
on finding a rule that links the patterns observed with each other (BruinsmaGerben & JohnsonShane,
2018)…
