“Robust knowledge requires both consensus and disagreement.” Discuss this claim with
reference to two areas of knowledge.
“Honest disagreement is a good sign of progress” (Gandhi). Nonetheless, the significance
consensus maintains in humanity’s pursuance of “robust” knowledge – the “quality,” practicality
and applicability of knowledge in reality – cannot be disregarded. Disagreement is critical for
verification and justification of present knowledge, conclusively bearing knowledge that
precisely reflects reality – correspondence and coherence truth. However, disagreement cannot
be realized without establishment of agreed knowledge; thus, consensus remains essential for
production of “robust” knowledge. Delineation of the interdependence of consensus and
disagreement in the pursuit of “robust” knowledge provokes one to naturally question: “to what
extent is consensus and disagreement necessary in the production of “robust” knowledge in
various areas of knowledge?”
An analysis of human sciences and mathematics will be conducted to respond to this
knowledge question. Human sciences are the empirical study of human behavior practicing
inductive causation, employing reason and sense perception (Dombrowski, Rotenberg, and
