ToK exhibition: constraints on the pursuit of knowledge
The ToK prompt I have chosen is: “What constraints are there on the pursuit of knowledge?” In this exhibition I will discuss factors that stop us from pursuing knowledge. The factors are moral values, discrimination, and knowledge itself. Also, I
will use perspectives, ethics, natural sciences, human sciences, society systems and religion to add more details and support my claims.
The first object is a research paper published in the American science journal ‘PLOS ONE’ by a research team at Chung-Buk University in Korea. The title is: ‘Custommade artificial eyes using 3D printing for dogs: A preliminary study.’ The research team removed an eye from two beagles and replaced them with artificial eyes and observed the dogs for six months to see the effects. The research concluded that there were no side effects on the dogs. Also stated that artificial 3D printed eyes could be used for humans. When the experiment was finished, euthanasia was carried out on the beagles.
This research received backlash from inside and outside of the country because of the
cruelty involved in the experiment. It sparked a protest for animal rights and against
animal testing, because people were furious about the research on the dogs…
